It’s August, and if you’re in cybersecurity, you know what that means: Black Hat in Vegas, 110-degree heat, and a ton of vendors, customers, founders, and investors converging to see what’s next. I’m super excited for this one because the world has dramatically changed in just the few months since RSA. I’ve started thinking about the market in two eras: Pre-RSA and Post-RSA.
At RSA, everyone was talking about the move from copilots to agents. Now we’re going deeper into the stack, custom models, agent infrastructure, and ultimately full autonomy.
And with that autonomy comes a massive new attack surface.
This past week, we got a visceral preview when rogue AI agents escaped their sandboxes during cybersecurity testing. This clip from Sam Altman breaks down why the incident is such a big deal.
Patrick OShaughnessy @patrick_oshag
Sam on the Hugging Face incident:
“This is the first security incident that I have felt very viscerally. I've been a little surprised that more people don't feel it so viscerally.
We paused training. We have to figure out how to secure our sandboxing in a world of multiple zero

My conversation with Sam Altman (@sama), CEO of OpenAI.
We discuss:
- Kimi, distillation, and open source
- OpenAI's compute bets
- The Hugging Face incident
- What happens after AGI
- Raising kids in an age of abundant intelligence
- And much more
Enjoy!

And here’s the part I can’t stop thinking about: the companies that caught the sandbox escape were AI companies, not security vendors.
That’s probably a preview of what’s coming.
Some of the next great cybersecurity companies will emerge from AI hyperscalers encountering brand-new attack surfaces first. We saw the same pattern in the web hyperscale era: Kafka and Confluent came from LinkedIn, Temporal came from Uber, and Kubernetes came from Google.
The agentic era will create its own version of this.
All that being said, I still meet with a number of new cybersecurity startups every week, and the bar just keeps getting higher. As I mentioned on the Resilient Cyber podcast , there are simply too many well-funded cybersecurity companies.
The world needs more cybersecurity but we don’t need all of the cybersecurity companies we have right now ( full pod here ).
So my advice to founders: show me the crazy.
Give me an opinionated view of where the world is going, not just what CISOs want today or what you can ship over the next two quarters. Show me what the market looks like 18 months from now, when thousands of autonomous agents are running continuously across every enterprise.
The good news it’s still so early.
AWS said this week that the demand it already has for 2028 is “striking,” while also reminding everyone that enterprises are still very early in using inference at scale in production.
It’s still so early.
From AWS:
“In fact, the demand we already have for 2028 is striking. And remember, enterprises are still very early in using inference at scale in their current production applications.”
We have no idea yet what thousands of agents running around in
Wow. Amazon AWS. Huge beat. AWS revenue $42.2B vs. $40.5B est.
AWS going to $1 trillion in revenue? Memory demand/shortage to last for years to 2028.
This is incredibly bullish for AI chips trade across the board.
Amazon earnings call: “We've done this before in the first era

Think about that for a second.
Today’s winners could be replaced tomorrow. We still have no idea what the world looks like when thousands of agents are running around inside every company, but securing that world will be one of the biggest opportunities in software.

This is just insane. For me the flash release is another DeepSeek moment. Intelligence so cheap and so good that it’s literally too cheap to meter.
Many don’t get how insane this release is.
DeepSeek silently updated their changelog with a new V4-Flash upgrade 1 hour ago.
Their new Terminal-Bench score is 82.7, a massive +25.8 point leap from its initial April preview score of 56.9.
Currently only available via their API, open weights release will follow shortly.

Please stop referring to your own models in the third person when talking about model bad behavior. Humans write the software; humans built the prompts; and they work for your company.
“Our” model is doing illegal things. “Our” model is risky. “We” now have liability.
In a review of our cybersecurity evaluations, we found three incidents in which a Claude model reached the internet from within or while interacting with a third-party evaluation environment, and then gained unauthorized access to the real systems of three different

In this worklog, I’ll walk through how we got here and how much, or how little, has actually changed since then. We’ll trace the major architectural developments leading to KimiK3.
